Privacy policy

The short version

There are no accounts on this site and nothing to sign up for. When you vote, we receive which question it was and which side you picked (plus a random id that helps us block spam), and we keep only a running total for each question. A few small settings are saved in your browser so the game can remember your picks and your theme. Our own code sets no cookies.

Every outside service the site relies on is described below, along with what it receives and why.

Who we are

This or That Games (thisorthatgames.com) is made by Lora Studios, a small independent studio. For any privacy question or request, write to us through the contact form.

Votes

When you pick a side, the page sends our server:

  • the question's id and the side you picked;
  • a random device id created in your browser. We use it only to limit how many votes can arrive from one device in a short time, and it is never stored in our database.

Votes are sent in small batches and stored only as running totals for each question. Our database has no record of who voted, what any one person picked, or which device a vote came from.

When you vote, or open a question you answered before, the page also asks our server for the current totals so it can show results. Hand counts you enter in Present mode stay on your screen and are never sent.

What's saved in your browser

The game saves a few small items in your browser's local storage:

  • tot_cid: the random device id described above.
  • tot_voted: which side you picked for each question you answered, so you vote only once per question.
  • tot_queue: votes waiting to be sent to us.
  • tot_retry_at: when to try sending them again if our server couldn't take them.
  • tot_theme: your light, dark or automatic theme choice.

Only the device id and your queued votes are ever sent to us, as described above. None of these items are cookies, and our own code sets no cookies. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them all. If your browser blocks storage, the game still works; it just can't remember your votes or your theme.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: page views, plus game events such as votes (which question and which side), category choices and use of Present mode. This shows us which pages and questions work and which don't.

Outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland, Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and similar) to tell visits apart. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland we don't ask for consent, so Google Analytics runs there without cookies or ad features (Google's consent mode with storage denied) and Google only receives anonymous measurements. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses; it uses them only to estimate a rough location, such as the country or city. Event-level analytics data is kept for up to 14 months and then deleted; aggregated reports, such as monthly page-view totals, are kept. We don't send Google your name, email address or anything else that identifies you directly.

To opt out, you can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, block cookies for this site, or use a browser or extension that blocks trackers. The game works the same either way.

Hosting and server logs

The site runs on Cloudflare (Cloudflare Workers). Like any web host, Cloudflare processes request data such as your IP address and browser type (user agent) to deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse.

When you send votes, your IP address is also used for a moment to limit how many votes can arrive from one connection. We don't store it. When our vote service hits an error, a short error message is written to Cloudflare's Workers Logs so we can fix it; these messages contain no IP address, device id or browser details and are deleted after about 3 days.

Our fonts are served from this site, not from a font service. Cloudflare and the other services named on this page may process data in the United States and other countries.

Messages you send us

The contact form sends your name, email address and message to our inbox through Web3Forms, a form delivery service. We use them only to read and answer your message, we don't add you to any mailing list, and we keep messages only as long as we need them to deal with your request.

Children

Some pages on this site are meant for use with children, for example in classrooms. We don't ask children for personal information and we don't knowingly collect it: there are no accounts, votes are anonymous, and there are no ads on our kids pages. The game never asks anyone for a name or an email address.

If you believe a child has sent us personal information through the contact form, tell us and we'll delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, for example in the EEA, the UK or California, you may have the right to:

  • know what personal data is held about you and get a copy of it;
  • have it corrected or deleted;
  • object to or restrict how it's used, and withdraw consent you gave earlier;
  • opt out of personalized advertising, without being treated differently for using any of these rights;
  • complain to your local data protection authority.

We hold no accounts and store votes only as totals, so there is usually very little we can link to you. Most requests concern a message you sent us, or the cookies and identifiers used by the services described above. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes everything the game saved on your device.

To make a request, use the contact form. We'll reply within one month.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the "last updated" date on this page. If a change matters, such as a new service that receives data, we'll say so here rather than change it quietly.

On October 21, 2026 we added the Analytics section (Google Analytics 4).
