Why kids love Would You Rather, and why teachers do too

For kids, it’s permission to be ridiculous. Would you rather have spaghetti for hair or meatballs for toes? There’s no right answer to get wrong, so even children who never raise their hand will happily shout one out.

For grown-ups, the value is in what happens after the pick. To answer “why?”, a child has to imagine both options, compare them and put a reason into words. That’s reasoning, perspective-taking and speaking practice, disguised as a joke. It builds listening, too: hearing a friend explain the opposite choice is a gentle first lesson in how two people can disagree and both make sense.

And it’s easy on whoever is running it. There are no materials and no prep, and it stretches to fill five minutes or forty-five.

Silly, funny and thinking questions: when to use each

  • Silly questions are pure nonsense, like would you rather sneeze confetti or burp bubbles? Use them for brain breaks, car rides and any time energy is low. A little gross is fine, and kids love it. Mean is never fine.
  • Funny everyday questions twist normal life: would you rather have recess all day or lunch all day? They’re easy to explain, so they work well with younger kids and brand-new groups.
  • Thinking questions ask kids to weigh a real trade-off: would you rather be able to talk to animals or speak every language? Save them for morning meeting, discussion time or writing, when there’s room for longer answers.

Mix all three in one session. Start silly so everyone is laughing, then slip in a thinking question once the room is warmed up.

How to talk about the “why”

The pick takes a second; the reason is where kids learn something. A few moves that help:

  • Give a sentence starter. “I would rather ___ because ___.” For older kids: “I would rather ___. One reason is ___. Another reason is ___.”
  • Ask “What would be the hardest part?” It makes kids imagine the downside of their own choice.
  • Ask “What if…?” Change one detail and see who switches: “What if the dragon had to sleep in your bedroom?”
  • Argue the other side. Older kids can try to give the best reason for the option they didn’t pick. It’s harder than it sounds and great practice for debate.
  • Praise the reason, not the pick. “That’s a creative reason” works for either side and stops kids from guessing what the grown-up wants to hear.

Would You Rather for morning meeting

A Would You Rather question makes an easy share for morning meeting: everyone can answer, answers stay short, and kids learn something about each other. One way to run it:

  1. Show the question on the board with Present while kids come to the circle.
  2. Read it together, then give ten seconds of quiet thinking time.
  3. Go around the circle. Each child says their pick and one word about why. Anyone can say “pass” and get another turn at the end.
  4. Finish with the big picture: press Esc, tap the side most of the class chose, and see how other players voted.

Something you can say:

“Good morning, friends. Today’s question: would you rather be able to fly or be invisible? Think quietly for a moment… Now let’s go around the circle. Tell us your pick and one reason.”

Some classes keep a question of the day all year. Work through the list in order, or let the student of the day choose.

From a silly question to opinion writing

Would You Rather questions are opinion writing prompts with the hard part already done: the choice is there, and every kid has an opinion about it. Adjust the task to the grade:

  • Kindergarten and first grade: draw your choice and finish the sentence “I would rather ___.” Add “because” when kids are ready.
  • Second and third grade: state the choice, give two reasons with “first” and “also”, and end with a closing sentence.
  • Fourth and fifth grade: write a full paragraph that answers the other side: “Some people would choose ___ because ___, but I think ___.”

One more idea: let students vote and see how their pick compares before they start writing. A kid who finds out they’re in the minority suddenly has a real reason to be persuasive.

Car rides, family dinner and bedtime

  • Car rides: a passenger reads, and the driver answers with eyes on the road. Take turns choosing who answers first. When the list starts to feel old, everyone invents a question for the person on their left.
  • Family dinner: grown-ups answer too, and they have to give a real reason. Kids find out surprising things about their parents this way.
  • Story mode: after picking, tell a three-sentence story about a day in that life. “I picked the pet dragon. On Monday it ate my homework. On Tuesday it flew me to school.”
  • Bedtime: one calm thinking question and a quiet answer. Read it from the list and leave the phone in another room; it’s a nice way to end the day without a screen.

Tips for shy or quiet kids

Not every child wants to explain their pick in front of the class, and nobody should have to.

  • Let kids vote before anyone talks, with hands, pointing or a tap on a tablet. Picking is participating.
  • Use partners first. Telling one friend is much easier than telling the whole class.
  • Offer “pass”, and mean it. Kids who know they can pass often decide not to.
  • Give quiet kids a job: running the clicker, reading the question aloud or counting hands.
  • Let them write or draw their answer instead of saying it.
  • Don’t single out a shy child just because they’re the only one on their side.

What “kid-safe” means on this page

These questions are written for kids, not trimmed down from lists for adults. Silly is welcome; anything a parent or teacher would wince at is not. You won’t find dating or romance here, or anything frightening or violent, or any comment on bodies and looks. Nobody needs an account, kids never type their names, and votes are anonymous. If a question doesn’t sit right with you, let us know.

For quicker, one-word choices that younger kids can answer in a second, try the This or That questions for kids.

Questions people ask

What are good Would You Rather questions for kids?

Good ones are easy to picture and fun to explain: would you rather be able to fly or be invisible, live in a treehouse or a castle, talk to animals or breathe underwater, eat only pizza or only ice cream for a week? Both options should be tempting, so kids actually have to think before they choose.

What are some funny Would You Rather questions for kids?

Kids laugh hardest at silly mix-ups. Would you rather have a nose that honks or ears that whistle? Wear shoes on your hands or socks on your ears? Talk like a pirate or walk like a crab all day? Read them with a straight face and let kids act out their answer before they explain it.

Are gross Would You Rather questions okay for kids?

A little silly-gross is fine, and kids love it: slime, smelly socks, giant sneezes. The line is anything that would embarrass a child or make someone feel bad. The questions on this page stay on the silly side, so you can read them aloud in class.

How do you play Would You Rather in the classroom?

Show one question on the board with Present, read it aloud, and have students point, raise a hand or move to a side of the room. Ask two or three kids for a reason, let anyone switch sides after hearing them, then go to the next question. A 20-second timer keeps the pace up.

What age are these Would You Rather questions for?

They’re written for kids from about 5 to 12. Younger children enjoy the silly ones and answer with a word or by pointing; older kids can handle the thinking questions and explain their reasons in full sentences. Grown-ups usually end up playing too.

How many kids can play at once?

Any number. One child can play alone on a tablet, siblings can take turns in the car, and a whole class or even an assembly can play from one projector. With a big group, have kids vote with hands or by moving, then call on a few for their reasons.
