Christmas This or That for the classroom

The last week before winter break is long. Attention is short and excitement is high. A Christmas this or that brain break puts that energy to use: kids move, giggle and get back to work five minutes later.

  • Brain break: five questions, a 20-second timer, and kids move to the left or right side of the room to show their pick.
  • Party station: set up a laptop in projector mode at one table and let kids take turns running it with the arrow keys while the others vote.
  • Morning message: one festive question on the board each day in December, with a quick tally of hands before the first lesson.
  • Holiday quick-write: “I would pick ___ because ___” turns any question into a short piece for the bulletin board.

Not every student celebrates Christmas, so keep participation optional and mix in general questions if your class needs them. The This or That questions for kids cover food, animals and school, and they work in any classroom all year round.

Running it at an office holiday party

Office parties have a predictable problem: the first twenty minutes, when everyone sticks with the colleagues they already know. A few rounds of Christmas This or That give the whole room something to talk about that has nothing to do with work.

  1. Put the game on the biggest screen in the room and press Present.
  2. Set the timer to 10 seconds and read each question once. People cheer for their pick or move to the left or right side of the room.
  3. Split into tables. Before the room answers, each table predicts which side will win. A point for every correct call.
  4. After ten questions, the winning table picks first at the gift exchange.

Keep it light and inclusive: invite people to play rather than requiring it, and never turn someone’s answer into a joke at their expense. For icebreakers your team can use the rest of the year, see the This or That questions for work, which also cover remote meetings and a weekly “This or That Thursday”.

Family game night, holiday edition

Few games let a six-year-old and a grandparent play on equal terms. Christmas This or That does. Put it on the TV or pass a phone around the table, then try one of these:

  • Who said that? Everyone writes down their picks for five questions. One person reads the answer sheets aloud and the family guesses whose is whose.
  • Kids vs. grown-ups. Each team predicts what the other team will pick. Every correct prediction scores a point.
  • Our family vs. everyone. Vote as a family, majority rules, then check the split on screen. Keep track of how often your family agrees with the crowd.
  • Odd elf out. Whoever ends up alone on a side has to defend their pick in their best holiday-movie voice.

It also fills the in-between moments of the holidays: waiting for dinner, the drive to see relatives, or the slow hour after the presents are open.

Hosting a Zoom holiday party

Virtual holiday parties need more structure than in-person ones, and This or That gives you an easy fifteen-minute block.

  • Share your screen, open this page and press Present. If guests see a black screen once it goes full screen, share your whole screen instead of a single window.
  • Ask people to type A or B in the chat. It’s faster than unmuting and includes anyone with their camera off.
  • Start with a 10-second rapid-fire round, then slow down for a couple of questions where people explain their picks.
  • Keep score in the chat. Whoever sides with the majority most often wins a small prize, like choosing the next song or the next game.

The same steps work on Teams and Google Meet.

Every question on this page is in the numbered list above, so you can print it straight from your browser: press Ctrl+P, or Cmd+P on a Mac. The page prints without the game or the menus, so you get a tidy list of questions.

  • Question jar or stocking. Cut the printout into strips, fold them and drop them into a jar or a stocking. Each guest draws one.
  • Place cards. Write one pair on each place card at the holiday table. Everyone answers theirs before dessert.
  • Advent calendar. Tape one question behind each door, or post one a day from December 1 to 24.
  • Substitute plans. Leave a printed copy with the projector instructions for the last days before break.

In projector mode, the timer lives inside the OR badge. Ten seconds keeps a rapid-fire round moving, 20 suits younger kids, 30 leaves time for a quick “why”, and 60 works when teams talk it over before answering. At zero the badge shows “Time!”; press R to start it again.

Questions people ask

What are some fun This or That questions for Christmas?

The favorites play on traditions people feel strongly about: real tree or fake tree, hot cocoa or eggnog, presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, white lights or colored lights, gingerbread or sugar cookies, a classic Christmas movie or a new one. The best ones split a room almost in half and get everyone arguing in good spirits.

What is a fun game to play at Christmas?

This or That is hard to beat, because it needs no setup and works for every age: show two festive options, everyone picks one, and you compare answers. Charades, gift-exchange games and holiday trivia are other classics. You can play Christmas This or That here on a TV or projector, with a timer and a hand count.

Can you give me 10 questions for a Christmas quiz?

This or That isn’t a quiz with right answers, but these ten work as a quick holiday round: cocoa or eggnog, real tree or fake tree, Christmas Eve or Christmas morning, sledding or building a snowman, ugly sweater or matching pajamas, candy canes or gingerbread, wrapping gifts or unwrapping them, carols or pop songs, snowball fight or snow angels, Santa or the elves.

Are there Christmas This or That questions for both kids and adults?

Yes. The questions are family-friendly, so the same set works for a class party, a family night and an office party. Kids answer for fun; adults tend to argue about the traditions. For kid-only groups, add the This or That questions for kids; for coworkers, the work questions.

Is there a printable version of the Christmas questions?

Yes. Print this page from your browser with Ctrl+P, or Cmd+P on a Mac. The numbered list prints without the game or the menus, ready to cut into strips for a question jar, a stocking or place cards at the holiday table.

Can we play it at a virtual holiday party?

Yes. Share your screen on Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, press Present and read each question aloud. Guests type A or B in the chat, which is quicker than unmuting. A 10-second timer turns it into a rapid-fire round, and you can keep score for whoever sides with the majority most often.

What is This or That Christmas Edition?

It’s the holiday version of the classic This or That game: every pair is about Christmas, from cookies and movies to gifts and Santa. It plays exactly like the everyday version, and the chips above the game switch you back to the regular questions in one tap.
