Would You Rather vs. This or That

The two games look alike, since both hand you two options, but they play differently. This or That asks about tastes: coffee or tea, beach or mountains. You answer in a second and move on. A Would You Rather question is a small hypothetical with a cost attached to each side: would you rather always be ten minutes late or always be twenty minutes early? You have to picture living with both before you answer, and that’s where the conversation comes from.

  • Pace. This or That runs at a question every few seconds. Would You Rather needs anywhere from thirty seconds to a couple of minutes per question once people start explaining.
  • Talk. This or That gets quick reactions. Would You Rather gets reasons, stories and arguments.
  • Comfort. Strangers find This or That easier. Would You Rather works best once people have relaxed a bit.

A good game night often uses both: a few rounds of the quick This or That game to warm up, then Would You Rather once people are ready to defend an opinion.

Playing the Would You Rather game with friends and at parties

The simplest setup is one phone and one reader. The reader reads the question, everyone answers together on a count of three, and only then does the reader vote and show the result. Answering at the same time matters more than it sounds: it stops quieter people from going along with whoever spoke first.

For a party, open the page on a laptop connected to the TV and press Present. The question fills the screen, so nobody has to crowd around a phone. A clicker or the arrow keys move between questions, and a 30- or 60-second timer keeps one big debate from swallowing the night.

House rules groups like to add:

  • Minority speaks first. Whoever is on the smaller side explains their pick. They usually have the best reasons.
  • One switch allowed. After the arguments, anyone can change sides once. If someone talks the room into flipping, they win the round.
  • Match the world. Before the result appears, each player guesses which side most people chose. A point for every correct guess; first to ten wins.
  • Pass the phone. Whoever holds it reads the next question and decides who answers first.

Would You Rather on a road trip

Would You Rather needs nothing but voices, which makes it a natural fit for long drives. A passenger reads from a phone and the driver only listens and answers. Never pass the phone to the driver, and don’t ask them to look at the screen.

  • Go around the car so everyone answers, driver included, before the reader taps a choice and reads out the split.
  • Keep score: a point for siding with the majority, and a bonus point for a lone holdout who wins someone over.
  • Take requests. Kids in the back seat will want sillier questions, and the Would You Rather questions for kids are written for them.
  • When everyone has had enough of the list, each player invents a question for the person next to them. Homemade questions say a lot about whoever wrote them.

All the questions load with the page, so a patchy signal on the highway won’t end the game.

Would You Rather in the classroom

Teachers like Would You Rather because it makes students give reasons, and reasons are the start of every persuasive paragraph. A routine that fits in ten minutes:

  1. Put one question on the board with Present and set the timer to 30 seconds of silent thinking.
  2. Students commit: a raised hand, a side of the room, or a sticky note on the A or B half of the whiteboard.
  3. Partners share one reason each, using a frame like “I would rather … because …”.
  4. Two volunteers make the case for each side. Anyone who is convinced can switch.
  5. Press Esc, tap the side the class chose, and show the split on screen. Then ask: why might the rest of the world see it differently?

The same routine works as a bell ringer, a warm-up for a debate unit or a journal prompt. For younger students, the kids’ Would You Rather questions are sillier, shorter and kid-safe.

Funny, hard and deep questions

Not every Would You Rather question does the same job. Knowing the three kinds helps you pick the right moment for each.

  • Funny ones are absurd on purpose, like would you rather speak only in rhymes or only in questions? They get laughs and fast answers, so use them to open.
  • Hard ones are real trade-offs: would you rather be able to pause time or rewind it by ten seconds? Expect long pauses and people changing their minds halfway through an answer.
  • Deep ones touch on values: would you rather be remembered or be happy? They suit small groups of people who trust each other, and they’re worth slowing down for.

A good session moves from funny to hard and ends on something light, so the game finishes on a laugh rather than in the middle of a heavy debate.

Ground rules that keep it fun for everyone

Would You Rather is supposed to make people laugh and think, not squirm. A few ground rules keep it that way, especially with people who don’t know each other well.

  • Anyone can pass. If a question isn’t for you, say “pass” and nobody asks why. On a phone, swipe left to skip a question without voting.
  • Explaining is optional. A pick is enough. Some people love to argue; others just want to vote.
  • Answers stay in the game. Nobody gets teased later for what they chose.
  • Read the room. The host chooses questions that fit the group. With kids or coworkers, stick to questions everyone would be comfortable answering out loud.
  • Hypothetical means hypothetical. Picking an option says nothing about what someone would really do.

Votes here are anonymous: no account, no name, no profile. You see how the crowd split, and nobody sees your pick.

Questions people ask

How do you play Would You Rather?

One person asks a question with two options, and everyone has to choose one, even when both are bad. Then players explain their choice. Here you can also play on your own: tap the option you’d pick or press ← or →, see how your pick compares, and another question follows a moment later.

Is Would You Rather a game or just a list of questions?

Both. Any list of dilemmas can be played as a conversation game, and this page turns them into a game you can start right away: one question at a time, with a vote and a result for each. You can also scroll through all 120 questions in the list and read them aloud to a group.

How do you play Would You Rather with a big group?

Put the question on a TV or projector with Present, read it out, and have everyone vote with a hand or by moving to one side of the room. Ask one person from each side to explain, allow one switch, then move on. A 30-second timer keeps things moving when the group gets loud.

Can you play Would You Rather over text?

Yes. Vote on a question, press Copy link, and paste the link into your group chat. It opens that exact question, each friend votes on their own phone, and everyone sees the split afterward. Then the real game starts: arguing about it in the chat.

What if someone doesn’t want to answer a question?

Let them pass, no questions asked. The game is about funny or tricky choices, not about putting anyone on the spot. On a phone you can swipe left to skip a question without voting, and in projector mode the arrow keys move on without recording any vote at all.

Do I need to download an app to play?

No. The game runs in your browser on phones, tablets, laptops and Chromebooks. There is nothing to install and no account to create, and the first question is ready to answer as soon as the page loads.

Are these Would You Rather questions okay for kids?

This deck is written for teens and adults. It isn’t explicit, but some questions are trickier or more grown-up than young kids need. For children, use the Would You Rather questions for kids, which are sillier, simpler and kid-safe.
