Play in projector modeWhat is the This or That game?
This or That is one of the simplest party and classroom games there is. Someone names two options, everyone picks one, and the fun is in comparing answers. A round takes seconds, nobody has to learn any rules, and there’s no score unless you want one. That’s why it turns up everywhere, from first-day-of-school icebreakers to team meetings, sleepovers and long car rides.
The questions run from easy to surprisingly tough. Cats or dogs? takes a second. Time travel to the past or to the future? can start an argument that lasts through dinner. Good pairs reveal something small about a person, like whether they’re an early bird or a night owl, without asking them to share anything personal.
The online version adds the one thing a printed list can’t give you: after you pick, you see how your answer compares, with real percentages once a question has 20 votes. Finding out you’re in the minority on something as ordinary as ketchup or mustard is half the fun. If you’d rather read the questions out loud yourself, 200 of them are in the numbered list above, grouped by theme, and the game keeps dealing fresh pairs from the full set of 2974.
How to play This or That with a group
You need one screen and one person to read. Everything else is optional.
- Choose a reader. They read both options aloud in the same tone, so neither one sounds like the “right” answer.
- Everyone answers at once. Point left or right, raise a hand, or call it out together on “three”. Answering at the same time stops people from copying the loudest player.
- Ask one person why. Not everyone, every time. One quick reason per question keeps the pace up.
- Check the crowd. On the regular game screen, tap the side most of your group chose and look at the split. Groups love discovering they’re the odd ones out.
- Stop while it’s still fun. Ten to fifteen questions take about ten minutes. Leave people wanting another round.
Large groups of thirty or more work better with movement or hands than with talking. Point to the left wall for the left option and the right wall for the right one, then judge the split by eye. If you want exact numbers, open projector mode and turn on Count hands: type the number for each side and the screen shows the room’s split as a bar. Those counts stay on your device and are never added to the public results.
Put it on a projector or smart board
Press Present in the top bar and the game switches to projector mode: one question at a time, in the biggest text that fits the screen, readable from the back of a classroom or a conference room. It runs in any modern browser, so a school Chromebook, a laptop plugged into a TV or an interactive whiteboard all work.
- Clicker support. Presentation clickers send Page Down and Page Up, so they just work: Page Down or → for the next question, Page Up or ← to go back, Esc to leave. Clicking or tapping a card also moves on.
- Timer. Choose 10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds. The OR badge turns into a countdown and shows “Time!” at zero. Press R to restart it.
- Hand count. Turn on Count hands (or press H), then use the + and − buttons or type a number under each side.
- Dark room. Washed-out projector in a bright room? Keep the default light screen. Lights off? Switch to Dark room.
- Every deck. The menu in the bottom bar switches between the general mix and the work, kids, Christmas and Would You Rather questions without leaving the screen.
The controls fade out after a few seconds without mouse movement, so the screen stays clean, and the site address sits in the corner for anyone who wants to play again later. Each theme in the list above also has its own “Play these in projector mode” link if you want to stick to one topic. There is no sign-up, no join code and nothing for students or coworkers to install.
Playing This or That on video calls
On Zoom, Teams or Google Meet, share your screen, open projector mode and read the question aloud. Ask people to type A or B in the chat, or to answer with the call’s reactions. Typed answers are easy to count, and they include people who keep their cameras off. If you share a single browser window and viewers see a frozen or black screen once you go full screen, share your whole screen instead.
For a slower version that runs between meetings, vote on a question, press Copy link and paste the link into a group chat. It opens that exact question, and each person sees the split after they vote. The This or That questions for work page has a full guide to running the game in meetings, along with a weekly “This or That Thursday” routine.
Ways to change up the game
- Rapid-fire. Set the timer to 10 seconds, ban explanations, and run as many questions as fit in three minutes. It wakes up a sleepy room fast.
- Move to a side of the room. Left wall for the left option, right wall for the right. People see who’s with them and everyone gets out of their chair. In classrooms it’s a two-sided version of Four Corners.
- Predict the crowd. Before anyone votes, the group guesses which side most players picked. Vote, show the split, and give a point to everyone who called it.
- Defend the minority. Whoever ends up on the smaller side gets ten seconds to win the others over. If anyone switches, the defender takes the round.
- This or That Thursday. One question a week in a team or family group chat. It takes no time and gives people something to talk about.
- Seasonal rounds. In December, switch to the Christmas This or That edition: cocoa or eggnog, real tree or fake tree.
- Pick a crowd. Playing as two? Use the this or that questions for couples. A dinner party or grown-up game night? The this or that questions for adults swap school and cartoons for rent, coffee orders and weekends.
What makes a good This or That question?
If you want to throw in a few pairs of your own between rounds, some simple rules make the difference between a pair that gets a shrug and one that gets the whole room talking.
- Both sides should pull. Pizza or broccoli is over before it starts. Pizza or tacos splits a room.
- Keep it concrete. Sunrise or sunset beats morning things or evening things.
- Compare like with like. Two snacks, two seasons, two superpowers. Mismatched pairs feel random.
- Keep it short. If an option needs a full sentence, it’s probably a Would You Rather question, a slightly different game built around longer, harder trade-offs.
- Nobody should feel judged. Skip pairs about money, bodies or family situations. A good question is about tastes and habits, not about who someone is.
Playing with younger players? The This or That questions for kids are short and kid-safe, and the Would You Rather questions for kids are sillier and great for car rides. Playing with friends who know each other well? Most Likely To questions work the other way round: instead of picking an option, everyone points at the person in the room who fits the prompt.
Questions people ask
How do you play This or That?
Someone reads two options and everyone picks one. On this site, tap a card or press ← or →, and you’ll see how your pick compares. The next pair comes up by itself a moment later. In a group, have everyone answer at the same time by pointing or raising a hand, then ask one person to explain their pick.
What is a fun This or That question?
The fun ones split a group almost down the middle and are easy to explain: sunrise or sunset, books or movies, beach or mountains, call or text. Pairs that make people stop and think, like time travel to the past or the future, work well later in a game, once everyone has warmed up.
How do you play This or That with a large group?
Use movement or hands instead of talking. Put the question on a big screen with Present, read it out, and have people move to the left or right side of the room, or raise a hand for one option. Turn on Count hands in projector mode if you want exact numbers, and ask only one or two people to explain.
Can you play This or That online with friends who aren’t in the same room?
Yes. Share your screen on a video call and play in projector mode, or vote on a question and press Copy link to send that exact question to a group chat. Each friend votes on their own phone and sees the split afterward. Nobody needs an account or an app.
Is the This or That game free to play?
Yes. Every question and the projector mode are free. There’s no app to download and no sign-up, so players never create an account or hand over an email address. Votes are anonymous: the results show how each question split, never who picked what.
How is This or That different from Would You Rather?
This or That uses short options you can answer in a second, like coffee or tea. Would You Rather questions are longer hypotheticals with a catch on both sides, so they take longer and start more debate. Many groups warm up with This or That and switch to Would You Rather once everyone is relaxed.
