Play in projector modeWhat makes a Would You Rather question hard?
An easy Would You Rather question has an obvious winner. A hard one doesn’t, because both options take something from you and both give something back. The questions on this page follow three rules.
- Two real costs. Neither side is a joke or a throwaway. Would you rather fix one mistake from your past, but lose one happy memory in exchange, or keep your past exactly as it is? Most people can feel the cost of both in their stomach, which is exactly why it’s hard.
- A trade-off in values. The best dilemmas set two good things against each other: security against freedom, being known against privacy, now against later, honesty against keeping the peace. Win $10 million and have the whole world know, or win $2 million and keep it a complete secret? That one is really about how much you value a quiet life.
- Close to real life. A hard question you could almost face next year is harder than a wild fantasy. Salaries, friendships, birthdays, commutes and old memories hit closer to home than dragons do.
When a question splits a group close to the middle, it’s doing its job. When everyone picks the same side in two seconds, skip it and move on.
How to play hard Would You Rather so the debate stays fun
Hard questions make people dig in, and that’s the point. A few simple rules keep a good argument from turning into a bad mood.
- Use a time limit. Ten seconds to pick, sixty seconds to argue. A timer stops one question from eating the whole evening and keeps the quieter players in the game.
- Everyone picks at once. Count to three and point left or right together, so nobody just copies the loudest person in the room.
- Defend your pick in one sentence. The smaller side goes first. One sentence each, then one reply from the other side.
- Allow one switch. After the arguments, anyone can change sides once. Whoever talks the most people into switching wins the round.
- Play devil’s advocate. Every few rounds, each player has to argue for the option they didn’t pick. It’s harder than it sounds, and it’s where the best laughs come from.
- Anyone can pass. Some questions land too close to home for someone. A pass needs no explanation.
Playing on a TV? Press Present and the question fills the screen. Playing in a group chat? Vote, press Copy link, and send the exact question to your friends so each of them can pick on their own phone.
What someone’s answer says about them
A hard choice is a small window into what a person cares about. Over a few rounds, patterns start to show:
- Safety or upside. Someone who picks a smaller salary that’s exactly the same every month over one that jumps around at random probably sleeps better with a plan.
- Now or later. Getting paid a little every day versus once a year with a bonus says a lot about patience, and about how people handle temptation.
- People or achievement. Would they rather be the top performer at work whom nobody much likes, or a middle performer everyone loves working with?
- Past or future. The memory questions show who holds on tight and who travels light.
Treat it as a conversation starter, not a personality test. A pick in a game says nothing certain about what someone would really do, and the reason behind it is always more interesting than the pick itself.
Follow-up questions to ask after a hard choice
The pick takes ten seconds. The follow-up is where the real conversation starts. Try one of these after any question:
- What would it take to make you switch sides?
- What’s the hardest part of the option you picked?
- Would you have chosen the same thing five years ago?
- Who do you know who would definitely pick the other side, and why?
- What if the numbers changed? Half the money, twice the time, ten years instead of one?
- Is that what you’d actually do, or what you wish you’d do?
The “what would make you switch” question works on almost every dilemma. People rarely hold a position as firmly as they first claim, and finding the tipping point is half the fun.
The hardest Would You Rather questions on this list

- Would you rather hear everything your friends say about you when you’re not around, or never find out?

The full list of 150 questions is above, numbered and grouped by theme, so you can also read them out loud without the game.
Hard, deep or funny questions: picking the right ones for your group
Hard questions are about trade-offs. They work best once people have warmed up and are happy to disagree. Match the theme to the group:
- Friends who know each other well: the friendship and money themes. Expect stories.
- Coworkers or a new group: superpowers with a catch, comfort vs adventure and the work questions. They’re thought-provoking without getting personal.
- Teens: the big what-ifs and the time questions. They’re abstract enough to argue about for ages.
- Two people on a long drive: the memory questions. Slow down and ask the follow-ups.
If the room gets too serious, switch to funny would you rather questions for a few rounds and finish on a laugh. If the group wants to go further, the deep would you rather questions slow down even more and touch on values and meaning. Playing as a pair? Try the would you rather questions for couples. And for a mix of every kind, start with the main Would You Rather game.
Questions people ask
What are hard would you rather questions?
They’re Would You Rather questions where both options have a real catch, so there’s no obvious answer. Instead of picking between something great and something awful, you weigh two costs against each other, like a fortune everyone knows about or a smaller one nobody does, or a big salary with calls at all hours against a small one with free evenings.
What is the hardest would you rather question?
There’s no single winner, because what’s hard depends on what you value. A good test is would you rather remember every face you’ve ever seen but never a name, or every name but never a face? Both sound useful until you picture the next party, and most people change their mind at least once while they think about it.
How many hard would you rather questions are on this page?
There are 150, grouped into eight themes: memory and the past, money, time and age, friendship, work and success, superpowers with a catch, big what-ifs, and comfort vs adventure. Use the theme filter to play one topic at a time.
Are these hard would you rather questions okay for teens?
Yes. They’re written for teens and adults and stay clean: nothing explicit, nothing violent, no gross-out humor, and no politics or religion. The difficulty comes from the trade-off, not from shock value, so they work at school, at home or with friends.
How do you make a would you rather question harder?
Give the attractive option a cost and the unattractive one a real upside, then balance them until you can’t decide. Tie each side to something people value, like security, freedom, time or friendship. Make it close to everyday life, too. A dilemma you could almost face is harder than a far-fetched one.
What’s the difference between hard and deep would you rather questions?
Hard questions are about tough trade-offs: money against time, comfort against adventure. Deep questions go further into values, meaning and how you see yourself, and suit smaller groups who trust each other. Many of the best questions are a little of both. For more of the second kind, see the deep would you rather questions.
